The Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC Hosts Start Me Up Business Plan Competition Awards Ceremony

(Harrisburg, PA -APRIL 20, 2006) The Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC and the Central Penn Business Journal, in cooperation with Ben Franklin Technology PArtners, Harrisburg Area Community College, Life Sciences Greenhouse of Central PA, and the Harrisburg Market Keystone Innovation Zone held the Start Me Up Business Plan Competition Awards Ceremony today at the Radisson Penn Harris Hotel & Convention Center.

Start Me Up, a three-tier business plan competition, awarded nearly $115,000 in products and services to new and emerging businesses in the region. The three tiers are comprised of:
  • College Venture Challenge - a business plan competition for college students that awarded, collectively, $12,000 to the winners and their institutions of higher learning. There are two categories Graduate and Undergraduate.

    • Zebrafish Mutant Laboratories from Penn State College of Medicine Team members Jessica Croushore and Wendy

Undergraduate first place winner

    • Ergatai Metering from Messiah College
      Team membersLindsey Reilly, Elizabeth Barr and Stephen Frank

Undergraduate second place winner

    • Nayamka's Art Gallery from Harrisburg Area Community College Evette Jackson

Murata Great Business Challenge - a business plan competition for companies in business two years and younger. The winning company received nearly $50,000 worth of free products and services, including six months free rent at the Murata Business Center , Carlisle .

  • RedBug Technologies

CREDC Fab 5 - a competition to find the "Top 5" companies in the region who have been in business two to five years headquartered in Cumberland, Dauphin or Perry counties. The following businesses will be the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC "Poster Businesses" for the year. Collectively, the Fab 5 received over $50,000 of free products and services including human resource and marketing consulting, a group of advisors, and advertising opportunities.

  • Corporate University X-Change (CUX) - Susan Todd, Founder
  • e &e IT Consulting Services, Inc. - Tracy & Linda Etter, Founders
  • Enginuity LLC - Jim Mooney, Founder
  • Express Dynamics - Treff LaPlante, Founder
  • Probity Medical Transcription - David Plummer, Founder

"We are very excited about winning the College Venture Challenge Undergraduate Business Plan Competition," stated Elizabeth Barr of Ergatai Metering. "We appreciate the opportunity to partner with regional businesses and economic development organizations who are interested in encouraging entrepreneurship in Central Pennsylvania ."

"Redbug Technologies is thrilled to have been selected as the Murata Great Business Challenge winner," added Andrew Hagenbuch, co-owner of Redbug Technologies. "We are excited about joining Murata and getting our business going."

Start Me Up was created to raise the level of awareness that our region is a great place to start and grow a business, recognize that small and emerging businesses are the job and wealth creators in the community and to spur the economic vitality in South Central Pennsylvania.
