WorkXpress (Express Dynamics) Builds Toward Graduation
Our story of success can be attributed to a good idea and a great deal of support from Murata and the local business community. Four and a half years ago, we, all three of us, moved into Murata. Our company, Express Dynamics, had been formed legally in the state of Pennsylvania as an LLC for a little over a year at that point, and we were bouncing around the idea of working from home or out of office space. Like most new businesses, we were struggling to survive and were reluctant to commit capital for an extended period. Then we spoke with Marsha Davis, the Murata executive director at the time, made us feel comfortable with the fact that our success was a mutual goal. Reluctantly, with Marsha's assurance of support through good times and bad, we agreed.
Now, nine team members strong, we look to "graduate" in the coming years from Murata. We've found that an incubator is about more than office space; it's about a friendly face to greet your guests, a common area with kitchen equipment, neighbors sharing similar experiences, and lights that actually work. But mainly, an incubator is about a community of professionals focused on your success; they could be full-time employees of an economic development organization or industry insiders devoting some time to give back to the community. Over the last four years, Murata has been our hub for people, programs, and information and has provided us with unique access to all of the advantages that central Pennsylvania offers.
Our product, WorkXpress, is an easily customizable business application software platform. It enables non-programmers to create the applications they need and saves time and money with speed of construction, flexibility and pre-built applications. Additionally, it can be used on any computer with a web browser. Still, I'm not sure if it's possible to turn a $1 trillion global market for IT software and services upside down with our WorkXpress engine. But, I do know that we've been afforded the opportunity to spend the last four years building WorkXpress without the constant distraction of short-term thinking or many of the day-to-day problems typically faced by startup companies. We've leveraged all of that benefit to build something that is, by all accounts, innovative and possibly even disruptive. So if it can be done, we are going to do it.
Central Pennsylvania is a rich breeding ground for a technology business. This fact our company knows firsthand. Murata and the local business community provided us many tools, and every young company should be so lucky as to have such resources and strong support from its neighbors. It's exciting to know that from nothing, we've created something - an organization that can even contemplate graduation. It's even more exciting to see dreams and vision begin to emerge as reality all around us. An incubator is about developing those dreams, and graduation is about recognizing their fruition. Under our current plan, at some point within the next few years it will be time for us to move on, and for that reason, we would like to offer our most sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone at Murata, the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC, and the community at large.
