August 6, 2008- AutumnWave, Dell make inroads with Dickinson College
by Jim T. Ryan-Central Penn Business Journal
When students come back to Dickinson College in Carlisle this month, they'll find more than textbooks and sweatshirts at the bookstore.
The college cut a deal with Carlisle-based AutumnWave and Texas-based Dell Inc. to sell more technology to students, said David Nelson, the bookstore's director.
The store has six AutumnWave OnAir GT receivers, he said. The devices allow users to view HDTV on a personal computer from anywhere an HD broadcast signal is available.
The bookstore will also sell Dell computers this year, he said.
The school wants students to buy and use the HDTV receivers with their computers instead of bringing televisions to save energy and space on electronics, Nelson said.
"You've got the computer on all the time, so why add another clunky device to use energy?" said Patrick Castellani, AutumnWave's president and chief operating officer.
AutumnWave will connect the HD receivers to computers for demonstration at Dickinson's Aug. 21 orientation for first-year students, he said.
Analog televisions typically use 30-40 watts of electricity, Castellani said. Larger models can use as much as 150 watts. An HDTV receiver uses two watts from the computer through the USB port, he said.
